After a few years without having returned home, my mother calls me to announce that my cousin Manaetti has received a terminal breast cancer diagnosis. This prompts me to go back to the countryside of Mato Grosso do Sul, to document Mana’s final moments with our family. Rather than wanting to make a film about cancer, I set my heart on celebrating the life of someone whose greatest passion was to make people laugh.

The sea is felt, presumed, but is nowhere to be seen. Nor is it wished to be seen. The story of Palermo’s complicated relationship with its sea, a vital space in the life of Palermitans, and yet denied throughout the city’s history. It focuses on the characters that breathe life into the last remaining bathing beach in the city center, Porticciolo Sant’Erasmo. This film came about as part of the Creative Curious Travellers artistic residence to which I was selected in the summer of 2017. It took place in Palermo during the Manifesta 12.
