After a few years without returning home, I’m informed that my cousin, Manaetti, has received a terminal breast cancer diagnosis. I go back to the countryside of Mato Grosso do Sul to document Mana’s final moments with our family. Rather than wanting to make a film about cancer, I set my heart on celebrating the life of someone whose greatest passion was to make people laugh.

Há doze anos conheci a melhor amiga de minha mãe, a qual viria a se tornar uma das minhas melhores amigas e, também, minha mãe em solo europeu. Este curta, surgido durante uma breve viagem que fiz à Nápoles em julho de 2016, é uma tentativa amadora de capturar o espírito radiante dessa mulher, Patrícia, que há quatro anos casou-se com Fulvio e imigrou à Itália. Foi através dela e sua história de vida, assim, que pude descobrir mais sobre a minha própria história – e por meio dos relatos vivos de sua mãe, pude, enfim, compreender um pouco mais a minha. ----- Twelve years ago, I met my mom's best friend, who would end up becoming one of my best friends and also my mother on European soil. This short film, which came to be during a brief trip to Naples in July of 2016, is an amateur attempt to capture the radiant spirit of this woman, Patricia, who four years ago married Fulvio and immigrated to Italy. It was through her and her life story that I could, then, find out a little bit more about my own story – and through her vivid accounts of her mom I could, finally, understand mine a little better.

On the week of her birthday, in August 2015, she finally travelled to Ouro Preto and Tiradentes, accompanied by her sisters, brother-in-law, daughter and grandson. But the dream revealed itself to be steeper than she could have ever imagined.
