director’s statement
How Catfish Hunt arose from my long friendship with Brazilian poet Ricardo Domeneck. Through his poems, a combination of spiritual longing and radical sensuality of the male body, I began to see images that demanded to be made into a film. At the centre are Bonito, an ageing poet from Brazil who now has to work in the fish market, and Finn, a young German man in the fisheries office who feels alienated in his own skin. The catfish became the leitmotif: a tough intruder that sees poorly in the dark but adapts and survives. That's what migration – and growing old in a community that glorifies youth – feels like. This short film is a tender, humorous reflection on desire, memory and the beauty of unexpected encounters.
