HOW CATFISH HUNT premieres at Max-Ophüls-Filmpreis

January 21, 2026

The new short film Wie Welse jagen (How Catfish Hunt), directed by João Pedro Prado and described as “a queer portside fairy tale,” premiered on Wednesday in the Short Film Competition of the Max-Ophüls-Filmpreis, Germany’s leading festival for emerging talent and a key national industry platform.

The director walked the blue carpet alongside producers Vincent Edusei and Maritza Gras (Carousel Film), lead actor Jonny Hoff, cinematographer Lena Krenz, editor Anton Buzal, sound designer Jakob Ludwig, and production designers Claudia Valeria Barrantes Sotomayor and Pascal Hubrich, among many collaborators.

The 47th edition of the festival takes place 19–25 January 2026 in Saarbrücken. Listen to an interview of Simin Sadeghi from SR Kultur with João and Jonny about the film.
